History:

"While until a few decades ago people were content to discover in words and pictures the animal world, we demand in our time, zoos, where the animals themselves in their various external forms , as in her appealing lifestyle and developing show them self before our eyes." With these words, Professor Dr. Hermann Landois initiated in December 1873 his "call for the establishment of a zoological garden of Westphalia in Münster". In June 1875, the first zoo was opened to Munster. The initial objectives of the Zoo founders was to show exclusively, "The all European mammals" , had soon  to be adjusted by the demand of the audience: 1876, the first monkey house was completed, at the 25th Zoo anniversarry the first elephant moved in to a magnificent mosque reminding a house. The zoo did develope thanks to the imaginative professor to a popular destination for city dwellers and the vast hinterland. After Landois death in 1905 the Zoo association led garden in the sense of its founder. During World War II, numerous buildings were destroyed, countless zoo animals lost their lives, the last two elephants were given as reparations to Belgium. But in 1950 an elephant could move again into the elephant house which was slightly damaged by World War II bombs. The mid-sixties was the end for the old zoo. The West German state bank was looking for a well located site for a planned new building. Because the city fathers was very keen on keeping the company in Munster, the Bank was offered the site of the old zoo. In exchange, the Zoo Society received a five times as large plot of land in the west of the city, where the so called "all weather zoo" was built. Lions and tigers were among the first inhabitants of the weather zoo, they moved in February 1974 to their new home. The transport of animals presented for zoologists an "adventure without role model". With guile and considering all precautions small and large animals were packed in boxes and sent on their way, hardly after that their new facilities were completed. Also, "Professor Landois" moved from the Sentruper height. His monument was from the previous location next to the house he had built at the old zoo, the Tuckesburg, removed and placed in the new zoo on the place of today that bears his name: Landoisplatz. On 2nd May 1974 the weather zoo was opened with the official handover of the key bi its architect Bernd Köster to the two chimpanzees Max and Moritz that further submitted it to the then zoo director , Dr. Helmut Reichling. Then the doors of the new zoo opened for the first time to the public and some 50,000 people flocked through the gates ... Also, the media coverage was enormous: in addition to laudatory statements (Münsters Super Zoo) there were some critical (Zoo from the retort ). It is true that the large animal houses made of concrete in the early years were like boxes in the terrain. In the larger part of the garden were constructed artificially hills and valleys were trees, shrubs, rank needed to grow.  However, the picture had changed dramatically already at the 10th Zoo anniversarry: The zoo had become green. With the opening of the all-weather zoo everything was not yet finalized. It never will be, because new zoological discoveries and equally the changing of tastes of Visitors require in the future a redesign of many Zoo enclosures that were considered at planning time in the 60s and 70s as progressive . Therefore, many enclosures have been rebuilt or radically altered in the meantime.
